Holsteiner Elite Auction Sale, Grading Under Saddle and Short Ability Assessment

Autumn in Holstein – this is the traditional time for licensing and auction in the land between the seas. Even though existing animal welfare regulations have necessitated some changes this year, the new concept utilizes synergy effects with the elite auction sale, a stallion grading under saddle and a short ability assessment taking place at Elmshorn on 4 and 5 November.

There have been no changes to the elite auction concept: handpicked by Alexandra Bitter and Thieß Luther, the collection now available for online viewing on www.holsteiner.auction with pedigrees, videos, and photos, comprises about 35 up-and-coming talents, most of them for the show jumping arena. The elite auction and the auction sale of the stallions are scheduled for Saturday, 5 November, at about 5 pm. The pedigrees of the elite riding horses, between three and six years of age, leave nothing to be desired: Casall and his sons Connor and Cascadello I as well as Calido I and his son Catch, same as Diamant de Semilly with his son Diarado and Diarado’s son Dinken provide for a wide genetic diversity. Moreover, the collection also comprises Million Dollar or Uriko offspring. A very interesting specimen is lot no 118: Minett by Del Arko d’Henvet (damsire: Connor) comes from the direct dam line of once-in-a-century sire, Contender. The three-year-old filly took silver in the free-jumping competition held during the 2022 Holsteiner horse days. Or lot no 124: La Douce by Million Dollar-Connor is very promising for both breeding and sport, as the four-year-old has been awarded state premium status and has already won young horse jumping classes. Two dressage prospects, by Vitalis (lot no 134) and For Romance (lot no 120), have also found their way into the collection.

Sunday 16 October: Presentation of Elite Riding Horses and Verband Stallions

A visit to the Verband Elmshorn facility is worthwhile already on Sunday 16 October, as the auction horses have their first public training from 12.30pm and may be tried out afterwards. And from about 3.00pm, the Verband stallions will be presented under the saddle of the new Holsteiner Verband stallion keeping GmbH head rider, Jens Klöppel. An informal get-together of the Elmshorn team, breeders, riders, prospective buyers and friends of the Holsteiner horse will top off the day.

Stallion Grading and Short Ability Assessment

Eligible for the licensing under saddle which also serves as performance testing are threeand four-year-old Holsteiner stallions. Following the grading under saddle, the stallions, in the best of cases performance tested and licensed for breeding, can be marketed through the elite auction sale and bred. Moreover, already approved three- and four-year-old Holsteiner and outside blood stallions may undergo short ability assessment at Elmshorn. “By participating in the pilot project we hope to provide information for our breeders who are able to get an all-inclusive picture on the young stallions’ riding horse quality. Moreover, we strive for new synergy effects between performance testing, grading, and elite auction sale”, breeding and executive director, Stephan Haarhoff, advocates the new concept. The Friday will see the stallions to be graded under saddle presented on hard ground and the free-jumping of the three-year-old colts as well as the under saddle presentation of the fouryear-olds (own rider). Scheduled for Saturday are the final presentation of the three-yearolds under their own and the test riders, same as the four-year-olds under the test riders as well as the group presentation at a walk and the announcement of the stallions’ approval status.
