Warendorf (fn-press).
In the wake of the outbreak of the equine herpes virus (EHV) at a tournament in Spain, many horse owners decided to have their horses vaccinated against the virus in the spring of 2021. The German Equestrian Federation (FN) now reminds that after the basic vaccination in spring, the repeat vaccination or the third vaccination of the basic vaccination is now due in autumn.

At the beginning of July 2021, the Advisory Council Sport decided at the annual meeting of the FN, after extensive discussion of the pros and cons, to introduce mandatory vaccination against Equine Herpesvirus-1 for all show horses from January 1, 2023. With its decision, the Advisory Board Sport followed the recommendations of the Standing Commission on Vaccination in Veterinary Medicine (StIKo Vet), which has been recommending herpes vaccination for all horses for many years.

Therefore, as of January 1, 2023, the following will apply: all show horses that have not previously been vaccinated against EHV-1, have not received proper basic vaccination, or for which the interval between two vaccinations against herpes viruses has been longer than six months plus 21 days, must be given new basic vaccination before starting a show. For horses that have been vaccinated for a long time of their life or if there is no information about the basic vaccination, the following applies: The vaccinations within the last three years must have been given correctly, i.e. with an interval of no more than six months plus 21 days, in order for the horse to be allowed to participate in tournaments.
